23 24 Hawthorn wb 10 June
We've had another busy, busy, busy week in Hawthorn class!
In English, the children wrote about a lonely hedgehog, basing their ideas on our lovely class book, WANTED: THE PERFECT PET. They'll soon be creating their own versions of the story which we're very much looking forward to reading.
In maths, Year 1s continued their work on numbers up to 100 - counting up in 10s and also partitioning numbers into 10s and 1s. Meanwhile, Year 2s have begun a new unit of learning about Money. They looked at coins earlier in the week and then turned their attention to notes. Any practice you can provide at home or when out shopping will help to consolidate their understanding.
We started our new topic entitled, 'Where in the world are we?' by creating a mind map of what they already know and some of the things they'd like to learn about. We then conducted a class survey to find out where everyone lives. We recorded this information on a class tally chart and pictogram, then the children located their homes using a teeny weeny 'Mini Me' picture!
In RE, we took a look at some Islamic artefacts which the children found very interesting.
In Science, we looked at being hygienic and the best way to wash our hands. The children did a short investigation using pink glitter to replicate bacteria on their hands, they were amazed at how much the glitter spread and got everywhere!
A highlight of the week was the Year 1/2 Multiskills festival organised by Mrs Thornton. This was held on Ashton playing fields and attended by several other schools from the cluster. The children participated in a round robin of activities and they all very much enjoyed themselves. Well done and a huge thank you to Mrs Thornton for all her hard work - ably assisted by Miss Fox and our Young Leaders, who did an excellent job!
