Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow class wb 10.06.24

As part of our Science work the children learnt about a technique called chromatography. The class found out that it is a method for separating the components of a mixture.  We used filter paper and coloured felt-tip pens to show how various inks moves up the filter paper. We created our own colourful flowers using pipe cleaners.  During this experiment, we found out some colours separated better and faster than others.

In writing lessons this week, the children explored the text ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. We looked at the features of a persuasive text to help us write our own persuasive letters. In Maths, we have been learning new mathematical vocabulary to describe straight lines. We used the artist ‘Kandinsky’ to identify horizontal, vertical, perpendicular and parallel lines. The children also described 2D and 3D shapes using the same vocabulary. We enjoyed creating 3d shapes using marshmallows and cocktail sticks, describing the properties of the shapes as we went along.

In our Art lesson we have been looking at the use of colours which are adjacent on the colour wheel to create a softer, warmer tone. We had a go at creating a selection of different shades before applying them to an image from Vanessa Hogge, who is the artist we have been studying. In our Topic, we have been exploring Roman mosaics and couldn't believe the level of skill that would have been required to create mosaic tiles so small using such simple tools. We had a go at creating our own, trying to be as precise as possible.
