Oak Week Beginning 4th November 2024
Our first week back has been action packed, with a Viking trading game, a musical chairs activity in PSHE, practicing for our special Remembrance service with the Year 5's and starting our new writing focus - suspense and mystery stories.
Our new writing genre has really sparked the interest of Oak Class and they have enjoyed listening to our featured short story - My Father's Attic by Philippa Pearson. So far we have identified how authors build suspense and tension and how using the 'power of 3' in our descriptions gives them more gravitas!
The role playing trading game in our Topic lesson this week was extremely good fun. One half of the class were Vikings, the others were Anglo Saxons. They had different products to trade with each other and had to face real life obstacles that they would have faced in the past, which seemed to hit the Vikings harder than the Anglo Saxons. Children took on 3 roles: a King, 2 traders and either 2 farmers or 2 fishermen/skinners. At the end of three rounds of trading, the Kings counted up the value of all of their goods and the winners were revealed. We reflected on where we could have improved if we did it again and what were good tactics. The winners from each group did a final trade off to work out who were the overall winners.
We started up the Huff 'n Puff activities this week, with a team of Year 4 volunteers running the activities under the supervision of the Year 5 Play Leaders. The activities have given the children some fun opportunities to play in a different way at lunchtimes and there were long queues to get their turn and plenty of smiles too. Next week the new members of the Kindness Squad will be on patrol in the playground too, they will be keeping a look out for children who are leading by example in how they play and rewarding them, and being on hand to help anyone who needs some support with their friends.
Oak's Year 5 children are working very hard to perfect the Remembrance Service for our special assembly on Monday 11th November. The service will start at 10.45, if you are a Year 5 parent please try to attend to see your child take part if you can make it, it is always a very poignant assembly.
