Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 23rd September 2024

Oak Class have been very busy this week in Maths as they have started their Mastering Number sessions at the start of each day. They have responded brilliantly to the sessions and have quickly got into the swing of using the new sentence stems, representations and gestures. Year 5 are very proud of the new mathematical vocabulary they have been learning ; factors and product for multiplying were revised and dividend, divisor and quotient have been introduced to help them describe the division process. We have been using some very large numbers in our Year 5 lessons and have been rounding these to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10, 000 and 100,000. Year 4 have been using a variety of number lines and comparing large numbers.

We have come to the end of our first writing unit based around Varjak Paw but we will continue to finish the story using it as our end of the day reader. The children have completed a big write this week to summarise all the skills we have been learning. They have been continuing a chapter in the story and imagined the next adventure Varjak Paw went on with his new friends Holly and Tam. Did they come face to face with Sally Bones their new enemy?

In our topic lesson we took on the role of a monk and wrote a diary entry for the events that happened during the Lindesfarne raids by the Vikings. We looked at examples of medieval manuscripts and the way that they used illuminated letters. We used a giant T in our diary entry and added some more designs and patterns to make it look more authentic. In art we have drawing Viking knots which were an important feature in their carvings. They were quite tricky at first, but the step by step approach allowed the children to achieve some great results.

In PSHE we are learning about how to be good friends and how our emotions affect this. We drew a graph of our emotions throughout the day until that point and the children discussed what the highs and lows of their days were, thinking about how these affected their day and their relationships with others. It was very interesting !

The highlight of this week was the Harvest assembly - the children in Key Stage 2 have worked very hard to perfect their performance of the poem and learn the words to the songs. They did a great job and earned some house points for all the effort they made.

Lets hope the rain stops soon!
