KS2 Willow and Oak wb 25.09.23
KS2 joined together for their Topic lesson this week in order to explore the homes of the earliest Stone Age hunter gatherers. During this time people moved from place to place in temporary shelters, living off what they could hunt and gather. Archaeologists believe that hunter gatherers mostly lived in tent type structures but sometimes in caves where these were available. Stone tools, hearths and cave paintings are just some of the evidence to suggest this. We learnt that they constructed their tents from animal bones and used animal hides to cover these structures. We held a vote to see which type of dwelling we would prefer to live in: cave or tent. Our responses were mixed but justified well by the children.
Having learnt all about the earliest Stone Age homes, we created collages to represent our chosen Palaeolithic home. The children worked in mixed groups and were careful with their materials to create some lovely examples. We also added labels identifying the key features of a Palaeolithic dwelling:
- Temporary homes whereby they moved to different camps depending on the season.
- Simple huts/ tents for living in.
- Areas surrounding the homes which were ideal for hunting/ gathering.
- Wooden canoes which had been carved and used to travel and fish.
- Forest stretching across the land.
We are now looking forward to seeing the changes over time throughout the Stone Age and finding out the ways in which home life became more permanent and domesticated.
