Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class w/b 8th January 2024

Happy New Year everybody! It has been a brilliant first week back in Holly class and the children have settled straight back into their usual routine.

This week, we had an unusual collection of things arrive in our classroom which the children, acting as detectives, had to make some predictions about. It turned out that the penguin, umbrella, little boy and compass where all things from our story this week, Lost and Found. Since solving the mystery of the objects we have created a story map and the children have all worked on retelling the story, adding actions and using lots of lovely story language.

In phonics, the year 1 children have been recapping some split digraphs this week as well as spelling the tricky words again, thought, who and where. The Reception children have been recapping the phonemes ch, sh, qu, ng so that they are really confident reading words with these digraphs in.

In maths, the Reception children have been working really hard matching quantities to their numerals. They have been showing us that they can do this through lots of whole class games as well and opportunities in their play. The Year 1 children have been focussing on the 'teen' numbers, ensuring they have thorough understanding of their composition. They can now show us how to make 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 using all sorts of different maths resources that we have in the classroom.

We have also made a start on our 'What lies beneath?' topic this week and the children have shared ideas about what they would like to learn. We have started by looking at the world map and finding our home as well as looking where the penguin in our story might have come from. We looked at how we could tell the difference between The South Pole and Ashton under Hill using aerial photographs and found Antarctica on the map.

Please note, Holly class will be going to forest school on Friday next week. The following week will be Tuesday, as normal.
