Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 14th March

There’s been lots more exciting learning in Hawthorn Class this week …

In maths - more fractions! Year 2s have discovered the difference between unit and non-unit fractions while Year 1s consolidated their understanding of halves and quarters. In our English lessons, the children have continued their work inspired by ‘Look Inside Space’ and practised a range of writing skills.

Mrs Clayton led an Art Masterclass on Monday afternoon. The children were introduced to a famous painting called The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Mrs Clayton demonstrated how to use watercolours and acrylics to create their own beautiful pieces of art. What a very talented bunch they are!

Tuesday afternoon saw the children take on the role of History Detectives again to find out more about the life and travels of Christopher Columbus. They worked incredibly well in groups to sequence a series of pictorial and written clues and then created a class timeline of his life. The next activity was a ‘conscience alley’ when one group of children tried to persuade some mini Columbuses to ‘Go, Go, Go’ on their travels, while another group tried to persuade them to ‘Stay Safe at Home’. We have an adventurous class of children because, after weighing up all the arguments, the vast majority decided to set off on their travels, exactly as Columbus did all those years ago.

This week was also Science Week and the children carried out investigations looking at the absorbency of different types of paper but to make it more exciting we made our own rainbows with water and felt tip pens and this showed which paper absorbed most efficiently!

On Friday we were very luck too, as Mr White came in and demonstrated his brain operated drone, real Science in action.  The children watched to see how it worked and then some of us got to have a go!
