Mr Gumpy's outing
In Acorn Class we have been enjoying the story of 'Mr. Gumpy's outing' by John Burningham.
Our reception children have made some lovely class storybooks of our own where Mr Gumpy travels, not only by boat but also, by tractor and by aeroplane. We have enjoyed sharing these stories with the preschool children who have had great fun re enacting the original story using a huge cardboard box as their boat.
We have also worked in small groups to share our ideas and build some fantastic model boats and this week we put them all to the test. The design criteria were as follows :
- The boat had to be waterproof.
- It had to carry six of Mr Gumpy’s friends – a cow, a sheep, a horse, a pig, a dog and a rabbit .
- It had to have a sail and be powered by the wind (provided by a hairdryer!)
Fortunately there weren’t too many disasters and Mr Gumpy’s friends made the journey without getting too wet.
