Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 10.03.25

On Tuesday, the whole school took part in a Cricket workshop. The children played various games to practise their bowling, catching and batting skills. The class all listened well to the coach’s instructions and worked hard to improve their fielding skills by working together as a team. Take a look at our photos of this session. Year 3 children also took part in a cricket tournament on Wednesday and really enjoyed the experience.

In Science lessons, the children learned about the different parts of a flowering plant. We played a dice game to help us learn the various parts and functions. We explored the role these parts play in pollination. Next week, we will dissect a flower to apply what we have learned. In our Topic lesson we have been learning how to create a field sketch. We used photographs from the view at the top of the meadow and used lines and basic shapes to plan out our sketches before adding more details. The children did a brilliant job!

In writing lessons, we have explored adverbs and their function in a sentence. In Reading we have been developing our summary skills by identifying true and false statements from a Roald Dahl poem. We enjoyed reading the text altogether and picking out the fun use of language in this nonsense poem. In maths, the year 4 children have been converting improper fractions into a mixed number. Year 3 children have been learning about mass and reading scales.

On Friday afternoon we created a mystery number game using Scratch to programme our algorithms. The children worked hard to make improvements to the game and add in their own challenges at the end.
