This week the children in Year 4 and 5 took part in a STEM workshop where they had to design an ‘Earth Mover’. This workshop was led by Sarah, an engineer, who explained to the children what they needed to create. The group worked in pairs to create their own loader of hauler using Kinects. They had to meet a brief which included the ability to move earth, a built in cabin and have a moving part. Thomas and Bethany were the team who won overall and will complete against other children from another school. The children worked really well as a team.
In our Science lesson this week, the children learned about air resistance and worked together to create a parachute. The group not only learned about the science of air resistance but also enhanced their problem solving and critical thinking skills. They learned that air resistance is the force that pushes against objects when they move through the air. The larger the surface area of an object, the more air it can push against and the slower it will fall. The children used this idea to investigate how to make the most effective parachute. Take a look at the KS2 photos of our investigation.
On Tuesday, it was online safety day. The class watched a live lesson all about spotting the warning signs of a scam. We learned that scams happen all the time and to make sure we are vigilant to help us spot and report them quickly. We discussed what we do if we spot a scam and how we can keep our information safe. The children created a flyer to share this important lesson about online scams. We also used an app called Chatterpix to share top tips on how to identify a scam.
In our Maths lessons we have been revising our previous unit all about length and perimeter to practise our skills and ensure we all feel confident when converting between different units. In Writing lessons we have continued to explore the Flotsam book and using it to develop our understanding of prepositions. The children produced some descriptive writing, using prepositions to make their writing more precise.
We hope you all have a lovely half term break!
