25Oak Week Beginning 3rd March
As another week quickly passes, we have been very busy in Oak Class.
In computing we are starting a new topic which will result in creating a pod cast. The children listened to an example of a children's history pod cast (Home School History) and took away from this the different elements and features of an interesting piece of audio. They then went away and came up with a voice recording of do's and don'ts for creating audio clips: they really enjoyed recording examples of what not to do as they got to record some funny clips.
In our topic lessons this week we have been learning some fieldwork skills and in the classroom learnt the step step process of creating a field sketch, recreating scene of Bredon Hill from a photograph. Then on Friday, we went on a mini field trip to the meadow to take part in our own fieldwork experience and observed the view from the top of the hill. The children had to identify the key physical and human features and record them as a sketch. They also used their artistic knowledge of horizon lines and perspective to help them make it as realistic as possible. The did a fabulous job and next week we will turn these into neat copies, fully labelled and shaded in with crayon, to stick in our books.
Also on Friday we had our World Book Day celebration of all things reading. We had lots of fun getting dressed up as 'goodies and baddies' from a huge range of different books and we did some different tasks in lessons. They all looked amazing! The main activity that Oak took part in was to be inspired by some ten word stories written by Joseph Coelho who was Waterstones Children's Laureate. They looked at the stories and their accompanying images and built up the wider picture of the story idea. They chose their favourite to write up - this was a great opportunity to get their creative juices flowing. As well as this they got the chance to engage in an Ultimate Book Character Championship. This involved the children championing their favourite book character and creating a Top Trump style card for them. They then had to engage in a 1 on 1 debate with another person to put forward different arguments that their character was better, braver, or just more exciting than their partners. This was lots of fun and the children were very determined to win for their character. We had Sherlock Holmes against Hermione Grainger and Robin Hood versus Tracy Beaker - can you guess who won? It was a great chance to practice their oracy skills and ability for think on their feet, coming up with good responses and reasons. It was also lovely for the teachers to swap classes and read a different class a story - Mrs Shiels had a wonderful time with Oak as did I with her little Acorns reading a Supertato book of course!
