Shaping Bright Futures Together

25 Oak Class Week Beginning 7th March

Oak Class were very excited to continue with their studies on how to produce a pod cast. After listening to another example Horrible Histories this week), we progressed to setting up the production sound we wanted using the software - Garage Band. They then had a play around recording their voices and adding in some bars of music to split up the audio. They had lots of fun and discovered some new music beats in the process, 80's synthesisers and electronic beats were very popular!

Both year groups have moved onto fraction in Maths, the Year 5's showed they had remembered a lot from their previous topic when they did a revision lesson. They have progressed onto multiplying fractions and have been very good at converting the improper fractions in their answers. Year 4 have this topic for the first time so have been looking at what makes a whole and lots of counting in a variety of fraction amounts.

Our writing this week, has been mainly focussed on preparing us for our Big Write in which we are writing a story in the style of book The Tear Thief. The children have created their own thief who steals an emotion and they are sticking very closely to the structure in the original book so that they can keep control of action and write an amazing short story. They are ensuring that the key features include lots of adverbial phrases and use of exciting descriptions including examples of figurative language.

After our mini field trip last Friday, we have been busy recreating the view from the top of the meadow. Our field sketches have highlighted the human and physical features of the local landscape and used some of the perspective skills we have learnt in our art lessons too. Our latest art project is to create an abstract landscape scene using collage. The children randomly selected one of the following techniques to create their own masterpieces : a landscape using only 3 colours, a landscape with a 3D element, a landscape created with torn paper or a landscape created by layering paper. They have only made a start this week but they are looking great already.

The highlight of the week for the Year 5's was when they had their final session with their buddies. As part of their homework project they all handmade a gift for their buddy and presented it to them on Wednesday afternoon. There was lots of excitement from the gift givers as the Reception children gleefully opened their lovely hand made presents. The Reception children had also made their buddy a very special gold medal decorated with their own drawings and little messages. It was an absolute privilege to share this experience with the children and it confirms that our buddying scheme is one of the special things we do at Ashton and it will stick in the children's memories for years to come.
