25 Oak Class Week Beginning 24th March 2025
We have had a very exciting week. We started with the Poetry Plate heats on Monday, and WOW they were all fabulous; it was very difficult to choose just 3 winners to represent us in the final, the standard was very high. It wasn't just the content of the poems that was impressive, the performances were brilliant and showed that the children had put in a lot of effort practising. Friday's final was fantastic our representatives did a fabulous job and we were lucky enough to get all the Key Stage 2 winners! Bethany was the winner and Sienna and Tabitha came joint second as the judges couldn't decide between them. It was a lovely assembly and all the children involved gave a great performance.
Wednesday was World Maths Day and the children have been practicing their speedy arithmetic skills and have been playing against children from all over the world! We created a list of the different countries and added them to a world map to show who we had been battling against. It created a real buzz amongst the children and they were very motivated to boost themselves up the leader board and play against as many different countries as they could. A real win for maths.
Also on Wednesday we had a Teams meet up with Dr. Peacey, Mrs Peacey's son who is about to embark on a world's first scientific experiment on the slopes of the Khumbu glacier on Mount Everest. We sent him lots of questions and he answered them all as we found out how he would eat, shower, sleep, keep safe and warm and he explained what he was going to actually do. It was fascinating and the children were very engaged in finding out about how to survive on the worlds highest mountain. The reason we did this was that our new book to study is all about the record breaking ascent of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. This is going to help us to write in a variety of tenses and produce recounts.
In RE we have been looking at the significance of the Torah for Jewish people. In last week's lesson we learnt about mezuzah's and how they feature in daily life and this week we found out all about the Tefillin boxes that are used in Jewish prayer. We used the artefacts to learn even more about the rituals involved in daily prayer : the Tallit (prayer shawl) the Kippah (a skull cap) and the Siddur (a prayer book). The children found it very interesting and we discussed why they thought the Tefillin boxes were worn on the head and upper arm; they came up with some excellent thoughtful reasons.
