Oak Class Week Beginning 17th March
This week we have switched our class book and writing focus. We are now reading a book all about Everest and Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's famous ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. We are using this text to write recounts and learn all about tenses. The children were fascinated by the thought of walking to the top of the world in a time without the clothing and communication technology we have in modern times. We have looked at newspaper reports and video of newsreels from the time, which again were a shock and look and sound very different to news we see and hear today.
In Science this week, Mrs Clements did some disection! As part of their work in Science lessons, the class have been learning about the structure of a flower. The children each had a daffodil and an alstromeria flower head and carefully took the flower apart using tweezers. They inspected the parts of the flower carefully using a magnifying glass. The children were intrigued to find seeds inside the ovary of the flower and compared the parts of the two species. The class really enjoyed this activity and felt like real “scientists.” Take a look at our photos!
It was our open classroom session this week and the children were very proud to show off the art work they have produced; an abstract landscape using collage materials. We also did some maths together and they showed their parents how to approach problem solving activities. It was good to see some collaborative working and it gave the class an opportunity to share their methodical approach to solving problems.
