Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class W/B 24th March

This week we have had another exciting week in Holly Class. All of the children prepared beautiful poems for the poetry plate today. They should all be so proud of themselves and all of the effort that they put in.

In Drawing Club, we have been focusing on the story ‘The Queen’s Handbag’. In the story the sneaky swan steals the Queen’s handbag and the Queen chases the swan across the UK trying to get it back. This has fed into our Geography lessons where we have been learning all about the countries and capital cities of the UK.

Later in the week, we received a new note from our alien – who revealed that his name is Johnathan – as we expected! He has asked us to let him know all about the names of the countries within the UK so that he can decide where he would like to visit next!

In maths this week, the Year 1 children have started a new topic – place value to 50. We have been exploring numbers 20-50. We have been using dienes to support our learning and have been able to discuss how many tens and how many ones a two-digit number is made from. The Reception children have been continuing their work on parts and wholes. We have been continuing to focus on making 10, however this time we have been focusing on finding 3 parts that can come together to make the whole. We have explored this using pictures to tell a story about what we can see and then have made our own using the numicon.

We have also enjoyed our weekly trip to forest school where we made a giant bird’s nest using sticks, grass and bark. The children enjoyed pretending to be the birds and counting how many children could fit inside the nest. The greatest amount of children that we could fit in was 14!

We have also managed to squeeze in some combined art and computing. The children explored the work of Piet Mondrian and then recreated their own line and shape art in the same style as him using the iPads.
