Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

2425 Holly Class Week beginning 6th January

Happy New Year and welcome back Holly Class!

It has been lovely to see the children come back to school so happily this week. They are eager to see their friends and share all their holiday news. We have had extra circle time this week as well as our usual show and tell time so that all of the children have have the opportunity to share their news from their time away from school.

Our topic this half term is 'Around the World' and the children were all very excited to look at Google Earth on our big class screen. We found Ashton Under Hill and then zoomed out to see the whole image of the Earth, it was lovely to see them so enthusiastic for finding out more. Some children shared facts that they already knew about different places and others had questions that they would like to try and answer whilst we are working on this topic. We will add these into our planning. We also now have our own Holly class travel agents and airplane for the children to travel around the world in and see all of these amazing places they would like to know more about!

This week we have enjoyed reading a book called 'Immi', it is about a little girl who lives in a beautiful igloo in a very cold place. During drawing club the children drew and wrote about her and her home. The Year 1 children have been concentrating on making sure they are writing in clear and well punctuated sentences as well as using their phonics when spelling.

In maths this week the Reception children have been working on numerals to 5, in particular learning about the concept of zero. The Year 1 children have been working on numbers to 20, making sure they are counting accurately as well as reading and writing the numerals and numbers as words.

The children all created some beautiful ocean sculptures in our art lesson this week. They used strips of paper to create 3D models of waves and cover their piece of card. As you will see from the photos, they are all beautifully unique and different!
