Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

24 25 Hawthorn Wb 24 March

We've had another busy week full of learning in Hawthorn class.

In our English lessons, we focused on performance poetry to help prepare the children for the Poetry Plate heat on Wednesday. The children worked in pairs and groups to prepare a range of poems for presentation and had some super ideas about how to use their voices and body language to improve their performances. Charlie, William W and Walter were the successful candidates who went through to today's final.

In maths, the Year 1s started their Multiplication and Division unit of work by counting in 2s and 10s. Meanwhile, the Year 2s have been measuring mass in grams and kilograms.

The children found out that England is divided into 48 counties and were able to locate Worcestershire on a map. They really enjoyed looking at some photographs of local places, such as Worcester, Evesham, Pershore and our very own Ashton under Hill. There were also some aerial photographs and satellite images. Next week we'll start to develop our map-making skills.

In RE, we explored Easter in more detail and the children then had a go at sequencing the story.

In DT we began a topic on Structures and the children were looking at the different shapes that you see in a structure.  We spotted that lots of the supports were cylindrical and so they then had a go at making their own cylinders of different sizes and widths.  Lots of fun was had in rolling and sticking our paper to get good results.
