Shaping Bright Futures Together

Acorn 25 Snow White

We  have been learning about Japan this week.  The illustrations in the book have introduced us to a different landscape of pagodas and cherry blossom.  We have followed this through into our learning, where we have made our own version of these beautiful buildings using large outdoor equipment and printed leaves and blossom onto a tree to make a beautiful Japanese seasonal display.

Our song for the week has been an old favourite ...Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  This is also popular in Japan.  We have enjoyed listening to it being sang in Japanese and have shared the Konnichiwa greeting at afternoon registration.  We have 'made' sushi out of playdoh, practised using tweezers (instead of chopsticks) to pick it up and enjoyed sampling fortune cookies (which are eaten in Japan and China).

In Maths, we have practised our counting and in Phonics, we have been listening to Mrs Shiels' robot voice as she gave us instructions to position an owl around the room.  We have looked at Japanese characters and recreated them in sand on the light box.

A highlight of the week has been learning about volcanoes.  We looked at pictures of Mount Fuji, which hasn't erupted for 300 years.  We then experimented and made our own volcano eruption, using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.  The children were fascinated.
