Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Acorn - Here We Are

Our rockets are now complete and we have continued our learning by looking at the solar system.  This book is a fantastic resource for illustrating where we belong in space. We have been looking at the different planets and their relationship to Earth and the Sun.  Google Earth gave us the opportunity to find Ashton Under Hill from space.

We thoroughly enjoyed watching Mrs Shiels launch her water rocket across the playground.  We also watched CBBC's Melody and she introduced us to Holst's The Planets (Mars), and we then enjoyed stars projected on black curtains as we listened to the music again.  We have also made our own planets by spreading a combination of 3 different coloured paints over a paper plate.

Our Maths focus has been shapes and we have been playing a game outside where we have to run to different shapes. Our phonics has focused on rhyming.

Our week was interrupted by Shrove Tuesday.  The children made and tasted Scotch pancakes and took part in 'pancake' races.  On Friday we celebrated World Book Day and our children dressed up in a variety of outfits - photos of the parade are here.  We enjoyed listening and retelling various stories and comparing costumes.
