Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 16.09.24

This week we have been busy ordering and comparing numbers in our Maths lessons. The children played a card game to calculate the highest and lowest value as well as in between values that could be made with their cards. They did a brilliant job of working independently and were good at explaining their thinking. We have also been learning how to add and subtract 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s using our knowledge of place value. As part of our fluency this week, the children have  been counting in 25s, 50s and recognising multiples of 3. In writing lessons, the class have been practising using conjunctions to form compound sentences. We have used our past knowledge of adjectives and expanded noun phrases to help write a setting description based on the story ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’. The children have worked hard to expand their vocabulary and have been using the new words in their writing to make their descriptions more interesting for the reader. We enjoyed designing a place where Arthur would face many obstacles on his way to the hall of the gods.

On Friday, we had a fantastic time learning how to make Viking bread and unsurprisingly, this was not the type of bread that we would expect to eat today as it did not contain a raising agent. We had a lovely time joining up with Oak class and worked really effectively in groups. This forms part of our Harvest presentation whereby we also started to learn a poem outlining key facts about what the Vikings grew and how they farmed the land. Our Art was also Viking themed as we learnt how to draw Viking knots. These are a common feature in Viking patterns and are evident in many of their work.

As part of our Science lesson, the children learnt about various animal groups and how animals are classified. The class worked outside to located information about the 5 main groups and matched the animals based on that description. The children worked well together to hunt out all the different facts to help them learn about classification. Take a look at our photos of this activity.
