Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 2nd December 2024

It is beginning to feel a bit like Christmas in Oak Class, we have some decorations up and had great fun making the baubles to sell at the Christmas Fayre. We are very proud of them as they look stunning, we hope they look as good on your trees at home and become part of your Ahston First School Christmas memories.

We also got creative for the new writing topic we have begun based on improving our skills to write non-narrative reports. We are going to be reading and writing about penguins in our new book Discover about Penguins - Meet the heroes of a frozen world. So to inspire us to write we have made some very cute pom pom penguins!!! This involved following verbal instructions, using DT skills and using our patience!! The result was a huddle or colony (the collective nouns) of adorable penguins! See the gallery to see them, fingers crossed they inspire some amazing writing.

Year 5 children have started to build on their knowledge of fractions in Maths and have been matching up and creating some equivalent unit and non-unit fractions. Year 4 have been applying their multiplication knowledge to calculate the area of different shapes.

On Thursday the children joined up with Willow class to take part in a mock up archaeological dig, recreating the dig at Coppergate in York which informed information on display at the Yorvik museum. They had to use their inference skills to work out what the objects told us about Viking life and describe details about the different objects. They enjoyed digging up the images and working together to reach historical conclusion. They showed a good use of the knowledge they have remembered from this topic to help them reach their conclusions.
