Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class week beginning 18th November

It was such an exciting treat to find a blanket of snow waiting for us at school earlier this week! We swapped our forest school session around so that we could make the most of time to play in it on Tuesday morning, lots of fun was had and snowmen built. The children loved exploring it and linking it to our science learning and investigating what happens as it melts. Later in the week, we also brought some of the ice into the classroom to see what had happened to the snow as it had frozen through the night.

Over the last couple of weeks, our theatre space of the classroom has been slowly travelling back in time and turning into a room in and old fashioned house. We enjoyed reading the story 'Peepo' this week, the children took a particular interest in the pictures as they show family life several generations back in time. Through drawing club we learnt that houses in the past often had bathrooms outside in the yard, they had ovens next to the fire to heat them and the children would have a bath in the lounge next to the fire to stay warm. The Reception children have been writing code words this week such as 'duck' and 'sock', practising using the 'ck' digraph they learnt in phonics last week. The Year 1 children have been learning about what adjectives are and how adding describing words to our sentences can make the writing more interesting.

In maths this week, the Reception children have been learning about triangles and circles. They have learnt some new vocabulary to describe these shapes and played games where they had to identify the curved or straight sides. They have also been on a shape hunt, spotting these shapes in the environment around us. Year 1 have been finishing their addition and subtraction unit of work. They have applied all of their new knowledge to build fact families of the linked addition and subtraction number sentences and have learnt that we can answer subtraction questions by using pictures or objects and taking some away, or by using a number line.

It has been wonderful to see so many family trees coming into school, thank you so much for supporting us with our history topic work by creating these with your children. The Year 1 children have been taking this learning about the past a step further and creating their own timelines about their life. They drew pictures to represent different significant things that have happened in their life so far and put them onto their own timeline.

This week the children also worked with some of the older children to finish packing the Christmas shoeboxes that will be taken to Romania. This has been a wonderful thing for the children to be a part of and really encouraged them to show kindness, think about others who don't have as much as us and what they might like for a Christmas gift.
