2425 Holly Class Week beginning 7th October
This week in Holly Class, the book 'Super Duper You!' has led much of our learning. This really supported our learning around World Mental Health Day on Thursday when the children all came to school in their glorious yellow outfits as we have been talking about our secret super powers and things that make us all unique. At Drawing club the children drew and wrote about their secret super powers as well as making their houses super by adding all sorts of exciting imaginary tunnels and turrets! The Reception children have been working on their letter formation as well as writing a 'code word' this week using some of the sounds they have learnt in their phonics lessons. The Year 1 children have been working really hard on sequencing two sentences and ensuring they are punctuating them correctly.
The children are all working really hard in their phonics lessons and enjoying their new learning. The Year 1 children have been working on the alternative graphemes for the 'ee' sound this week (e_e, ei, ey and y) and the Reception children now know the first 6 sounds. They have been working hard on segmenting and blending some 3 letter words and have all now brought home a book to read at home that has words in that they can practise reading. They are all looking forward to sharing with you what they can do!
In maths this week, the Reception children have been representing and subitising numbers 1 to 3 as well as playing games that involve finding 1 more and 1 less. They have enjoyed learning about how to use tens frames and double sided counters to help them with their maths learning! The Year 1 children have been learning how to write number sentences from the part part whole models we looked at last week and have also been finding out about number bonds. They have been finding number bonds for numbers within 10 and using different practical resources, such as numicon and tens frames, to help them.
We have continued to explore materials in science lessons and the children all enjoyed hunting for magnetic materials around the classroom. Before we started the children thought that magnetic things were always metal and always silver, we created our own investigation to see if this was true! The Year 1 children then took this a step further and recorded their answers to a magnetic materials test in their science books.
On Friday we had a wonderful afternoon at Forest School with Mrs Shiels. The Reception children made their first trip up to our forest school in the woods and the Year 1 children took great pride in showing them around!
