Shaping Bright Futures Together

2425 Holly Class Week beginning 11th November

What a busy but brilliant week in Holly class!

On Monday it was the school Remembrance service and the children took part brilliantly, we were so proud of how respectful they were throughout. In class this week we have been reading 'Peace Lily', a lovely story about a nurse in WW1 and that has given the children some context for the service on Monday and the significance of people wearing poppies. When we were filling in our floor book together this week, one of the children said to me, "It was a special assembly about lots of men who were gone in the war. We had poppies and they are to remember them. The poppies were the first flowers that came up when the war ended."

At the end of the story, 'Peace Lily', there is a beautiful family gallery showing old fashioned family photos. This week in drawing club, the children have created their own family galleries and they are excited to share them with you at our open classroom today. The Year 1 children have been working on using 'and' as a conjunction to join ideas in sentences. They practised doing this earlier in the week and then independently wrote about their families showing off this new skill. We are really looking forward to looking at these alongside the family trees that the children are starting to bring into school as part of our topic work.

In maths this week, the Year 1 children have continued to work on subtraction, working hard to record their number sentences and learning about how they are part of fact families. The Reception children have been working on finding 1 more and 1 less. They have made their own little books inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar showing their favourite food and eating 1 more piece of food each day.

Tuesday was a brilliant adventure as the children went to the cinema as part of the whole school trip. They behaved brilliantly and had a wonderful time, going on the bus and sitting in front of the big screen for the film was very exciting!

This week was also anti-bullying week, we focussed on kindness in Holly class and have spent time thinking about how we can show kindness at school. On Wednesday we helped Mrs Stephenson with the sorting for the Christmas shoeboxes that she is taking to Romania. We counted out cuddly toys into groups of ten and sorted the coloured pens, counting as we went. We also wrote Christmas cards to go inside the boxes. Next week we are looking forward to helping with the packing!
