This week we have started our new Art topic based on sculptures made with clay. We explored the work of Vanessa Hogge who is a British ceramic artist inspired by nature and uses simple tools and techniques to create complex looking pieces. One of our activities was to reflect on her sculptures by considering how they made us feel, possible reasons why she chose to leave the piece white instead of using paint and what texture she was creating. We will be working towards creating our own flower sculpture in the next few weeks.
As part of our Science lesson, the children worked together in a group to create their own life cycle presentation. Each group was given a different life cycle to research. They worked together to create their own group presentation to teach the others in the class about their topic. The children have been very interested in our class caterpillars and we are waiting patiently for the next stage. Hopefully they will create a chrysalis by the end of the week. We have also looked at the similarities and differences of the different life cycles to compare them.
In maths the children have been learning about converting pounds and pence. We looked at ways to make amounts using just silver coins. We will be learning how to add and subtract coins as well as finding change. This is a very important life skill for the children to learn. In writing lessons the children have been looking at direct speech. We recapped what we have already learned and used our knowledge when writing a story based on ‘Escape from Pompeii’. The children also recited the poems they have been learning at home to the rest of the class. Thank you to the children and parents who found and practised a poem for the chance to take part in the poetry plate competition.
