Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 17.06.24

We have finally had some sun this week! Therefore, Willow class were able to carry out their long-awaited shadow experiment! In the morning, the children worked with a partner to draw around and measure the length of their shadow. During the day, the class went into the playground every hour to record the length and position of their shadows. We observed the changes that happened and why. We made a prediction at the start of our investigation and recorded our results clearly in a table. At the end of the day, we wrote about what we had found out and why our shadow changes depending on the time of day and position of the sun.

This week we have continued to explore the features of persuasion and applied our skills to a class debate on the subject of graffiti: art or vandalism? The children took on the role of different members of the community including a graffiti artist, members of parliament, street cleaners and art gallery owners. They were tasked with working together to explain their reasons for or against graffiti and had to include specific features such as a rhetorical question. We then recorded these as a balanced argument, building in clear reasons using conjunctions and starting our sentences with fronted adverbials to help move our points on.

In our Maths lessons, we have been interpreting data, focusing on bar charts. We looked at a selection of bar charts and had to decipher what we could tell just by looking at the data provided. We then had a go at creating our own from a set of data, taking into consideration the scale and remembering to label the different axis. The children worked hard to record the data accurately.

In Topic lessons, we have been exploring the equipment which was necessary for a Roman soldier to have in order to fulfil their job role effectively. We created labelled diagrams to identify the purpose of each individual piece of equipment. We then created some Roman pottery to be used as an olive oil dipping bowl. We started by making a pinch pot, before adding patterned details. Next week, we will be painting these.
