Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 08.04.24

Welcome back! We hope you have had a lovely Easter break and ready for the summer term. This week as part of our Science topic about life cycles, the children observed our class caterpillars. These will take several weeks to grow and transform into a butterfly. We will watch the caterpillars crawl to the top of the pot and create a chrysalis. These will then be transferred to the butterfly habitat ready for hatching. We can observe the butterflies for a few days before they are released.

As part of our writing, the children have been exploring the text ‘Escape from Pompeii’. We looked at various diary entries written by the main characters and extended our vocabulary by discovering new words to add description. The children have produced some promising work and we look forward to the writing they produce in the coming weeks.

In maths, we have continued our work on fractions. We learned how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. We have been finding fractions of amounts of unit and non unit fractions and using our knowledge to solve problems.

In our Topic lesson, we have been exploring earthquakes, looking at the causes and effects on the environment and people. We used two pieces of paper to represent the tectonic plate boundaries, moving them in different directions to look at the natural disasters they cause before exploring some of the effects. We discussed the ways in which people can try to stay safe in these situations and how buildings have been designed to be more earthquake proof. We then created posters looking at how people can best respond to an earthquake scenario.

Our new Computing unit will involve us creating a Roman animation using IPADS. This week we introduced stop frame animations and discussed how animations have changed over time. The children created a flip book by sequencing images in preparation for using the IPADS next week.
