Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 03.06.24

This week as part of our writing lessons the children learned what a metaphor is and how it can they can be used effectively in a poem. We explored a poem about a storm and compared the different verses. We found out the difference between a simile and metaphor and how repetition was used for effect. The children came up with their own metaphors to describe what the sea can be compared to. Towards the end of the week, the children had a go at writing their own poems using metaphors and adapted 'The Sea' poem by comparing it to an animal of our own choice.

In Maths, the children learned about angles and turns. We used the language clockwise and anticlockwise to show the direction of our turn. We used nature in the playground to show our understanding of turns and to reinforce our knowledge of position and direction. We built upon our learning of time and the direction the hands of the clock move to help us remember the different vocabulary. The class explored right angles and compared the size of angles greater and smaller than a right angle.

In Art this week, we have been exploring different artists who have been inspired by flowers. The children worked in groups to study an artist before 'teaching' the class how and why their artist had been inspired by flowers. As part of this we described the pieces of art, considered our own opinions and the emotions each piece might evoke. Each group had to present their findings to the rest of the class and we then compared the different styles.

In Computing, we have started to use a new app which is called Canva. As part of our unit on editing, we looked at how we could change font style, size and colour as well as considering our target audience. We edited party invitations by exploring the different ways in which we could present the same information so that it was most appealing and suited to purpose.

Our photos this week are from our PE lesson where the children were learning to throw shot put for the first time.
