Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 29th April 2024

We are becoming experts on the Shakespeare play A Midsummers Nights Dream and have read two different summarised versions of the story and watched  a BBC film version of the story. The children have got a great grasps of who the characters are and how they are linked together in this very complicated plot. On Friday, we acted out different sections of the story and made some tableau freeze frames adding speech bubbles to them to show what the characters would be saying at that point in the story. We will be re-writing different sections of the play as a script next week and learning about the structure of play script.

On Monday we did the next task for the Micro:bit playground survey project: we measured the area of the outside space we have. The children coded them to count strides every time they pushed button A (with an icon and bleep to check it's being counted). When they pushed button B it totalled the strides and calculate how far it was in meters. We divided up the playground into 3 sections and calculated the width and length of each section to allow us then to work out the total area. They took each measurement 3 times to get an average - lots of links to maths and our decimals work.

In our Roman study we learnt about the final rebellion during their invasion of Britain by Boudicca and discussed why she deserved the prestigious statue in London by the River Thames. We worked through all the stages that led up to the final confrontation where the Romans overpowered her Icini tribe and reflected on why she took on this enormous challenge. The class used their history detective skills to decide on her reasons and made really considered decisions.

On Thursday we had a real treat when we watched the theatre group perform their version of The Jungle Book. The children were completely immersed in the story and thoroughly enjoyed being so close to the action being performed. They particularly enjoyed the costumes and the scenery - let's hope the Year 5's have taken some tips for their play next term.

It was great to see so many of you at the Condover parent meeting, we have been doing extra PSHE relating to the visit in lessons and have been considering some of the dilemmas and challenges they may face whist they are away. Giving the children some coping strategies and getting them to think about how they will react when they are away from home is proving very valuable and make them more prepared for their upcoming adventure.

We have also welcomed back Miss Fox a first year Teacher Training trainee to Oak Class for the next 8 weeks.
