Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 26th February 2023

We have been working incredibly hard this week and have produced some fantastic work, showing great resilience and determination to conquer new skills.

In Maths we have been continuing to work with fractions; Year 4 have been using mixed numbers and improper fractions and converting them from one to the other. Year 5 have been adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, using lots of skills to solve problems. In Writing lessons we have built on the homework task they completed and have written speeches for a debate with the question Are Creme Eggs good to eat? They have used lots of persuasive phrases to promote their side of the argument and next week they will have a class debate and the most persuasive arguments will be victorious.

Our computing lesson was very exciting this week, as we programmed the Micro;bits to become pedometers. We modified the Micro;bit to have a strap so it could be attached to either wrists or ankles and then wrote the code to make it count the number of steps  each time it shaken. The children learnt that the accelerometer inside the Micro;bit would sense this shaking movement and then the code added the total of shakes made. The children had great fun testing their pedometers, seeing who could get the greatest total of steps. Next week we will be coding them to record temperatures around the school.

The vast majority of the class learnt a new life skill this week: to sew! The progress achieved with their sewing skills was absolutely amazing, from never holding a needle to sew using back stitch to create their DT project was a real Yeti moment for many of the class. As a result all of the children have managed to sew a pencil case from their own choice of material, they stitched the seams, and added a loop and sewed on a button. The next stage is to embroider their names and then use the lino prints to print onto the pencil case to finalise their overall design. The sense of achievement was so wonderful to see and the pride they had in their work was wonderful. We couldn't have managed this without a few extra helpers, so a big thank goes out to the volunteers who were invaluable.
