Oak Week Beginning 10th June 2023
Year 5 have been very busy perfecting the play, and really improving their ability to remember their lines and put lots of enthusiasm into their acting. Meanwhile, back in class, Year 4 have been very busy developing their opinions on different issues to create a balanced argument. They have planned out lots of ideas and have started to write up their views remembering to explain both sides of the issue. In Maths they have continued to use their skills with money and been estimating and calculating, solving number problems and trying to improve their logical approaches to tackling a number challenge.
In History, the children got creative after studying the ancient busts of Roman soldiers. They looked at them very carefully observing what they were made of, what their facial expression told us about them and they concluded whether the information they gathered was very relevant, somewhat relevant or not relevant at all. After this they had a go at making one themselves out of plasticine. They had great fun and were able to produce some really impressive final sculptures. Check them out in the gallery.
A selection of Year 4's helped out Mrs Thornton on Wednesday to run a Multi sports festival for Key Stage 1 children in our cluster, they were absolute stars and did hundreds of steps that morning, they were very tired in the afternoon! See the Sports Blog for more information.
Friday afternoon's in our Art slot, we got the watercolours out and did some colour mixing to show how we could make analogous colours. These are a group of colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. It could be a group of three or four colours that are close to each other. The colours all share a colour, usually a primary colour as the base for mixing. Analogous colours are often used in paintings because the colours match very well. When used together they often give a calming and soothing effect to the painting. Analogous colours are often used best in paintings of nature so they fit our flower study work perfectly. I have put some examples into the gallery.
Two or our Year 5 pupils represented us at the STEM Challenge Final. They both did well - great team work and communication. They had to design a structure that moved a Knex bridge up 10cm or so and along about 18cm. They had a good, simple design. Didn't quite operate as smoothly as they'd hoped by the end but still a great effort. Sadly they didn't win but enjoyed the experience. It was held at Mazak, in Worcester which is an interesting Japanese engineering firm -they make lots of machines that make other machines and tools. They also got to have a wander around an exhibition space and have a donut! What a fabulous experience!
