2324 Holly Class week beginning 22nd April
It has been wonderful to have so many children in Holly class enjoying performing their poems as part of the school poetry plate competition. We really enjoyed listening to all of the poems and the children voted for their favourite to send forwards to the whole school final on Friday morning. It was lovely to see all of the children supporting their friends and celebrating everyone's achievements.
We have started a new unit of work in our Literacy lessons this week and happened across a new story which happened to be stuck up a tree in the school playground. Before we could read it the children had to work out how to get it down. Have a look at the photos to see some of the attempts! The book that eventually fell down to us is called 'Stuck' and is all about a kite that Floyd gets stuck up a tree and his wild and wonderful attempts to get it down. As we read the story, the children made some super predictions about what they thought might happen next.
In maths, the Year 1 children have been working on counting in 2s and 10s this week. They have worked on this practically and then using numberlines and number squares to help them, before feeling confident to count aloud without these resources to help them. Towards the end of the week they also worked on solving some problems using these new counting skills. The Reception children have been continuing to develop their subitising skills, working specifically on counting more abstract things such as sounds they hear. We have also recapped the odd and even numbers up to 10 using our number block friends to help!
At forest school on Tuesday the children did a brilliant job of making a 'messy map' to show their rout to the meadow. They used the natural resources they found around them to make it first, before drawing out their own maps to help them get back to school. Luckily, nobody got lost on the way back!
The Year 1 children have also started their new history topic about the Great Fire of London this week. They completed a history detectives activity where they had to look at clues to try and work when and how the fire started. The children are also really enjoying checking on the sunflowers we planted last week, it has been lovely to start to see some green shoots this week and some of the children have made some brilliant observations. We are also starting to watch the eggs in the incubator more and more closely as our countdown approaches day 21. We are very hopeful to have some new arrivals next week!
