Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 Holly Class W/B 27th October

The first half term of Autumn is complete! To finish off our topic this week, year 1 created their own fact files about one of the explorers we have learnt about this term. They wrote sentences about what they did, where they travelled to and why they are important.

In phonics this week, Reception have covered the phonemes h, b and f and writing these within words. Year 1 have covered the split digraph i-e, as well as it’s alternative spellings and the tricky words do, some, come and were.

Our story for this week was penguin small and Reception spoke to a teacher about what they could recall from the story, as well as using their phonics knowledge to write a word to match a picture.

In maths this week, Reception learnt the song ‘5 little peas in a peapod pressed’ and used this to enhance their understanding of the number 5. The children also explored collecting 5 objects based on specific characteristics, such as size, colour and shape. For their focused maths activity this week, the children were asked to match quantities to numerals using ‘spiders’.

For forest school this week, the children walked up to the wood with Mrs Shiels and explored the different areas. They absolutely loved climbing trees, building houses and digging holes with the shovels.

Other activities that Holly Class enjoyed this week include pumpkin threading, potion making and cake decorating!

We hope everyone has a fantastic half term!  Miss Palmer and Miss Hunt
