Lost and Found
What a lovely start to the term it has been. We have welcomed three new children into the school family and started our topic of 'What Lies Beneath'. The book 'Lost and Found' tells a story of friendship in colder climates. What an inspiration for developing friendships between the Acorn class new and existing children.
We have created a great small world area, and the children have enjoyed using their imagination playing with it. We have also done a number of ice and water related experiments. The children thoroughly enjoyed testing different objects that they could make into boats for our penguin and boy to ride in. Some floated, some sank and some let in water so that the occupants got wet!
On Wednesday, the children were given the challenge of freeing some polar bears from an iceberg. They became scientists and tried various methods - hitting with a spoon, adding sand, adding warm water and eventually adding salt. The addition of salt was particularly exciting as the ice cracked and melted. Our Thursday experiment was not so successful; testing out the difference in fresh and salt water buoyancy. However, we were able to use some excellent "floating and sinking" vocabulary.
We have also made some penguins to decorate the classroom wall, and been using our phonic knowledge to identify animals by their initial sound.
