Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow Week Beginning 19th June

Willow class have been writing their own explanation texts based on the book 'Until I met Dudley'. In this book, Dudley, the techno - wizard dog, has the answers for how everyday items work including a toaster, fridge and washing machine. He also includes a page of questions which he wants us to find out about. We took the idea of how bubbles get into fizzy drinks and wrote our own explanation texts to explore the process. In the style of the book, we wrote a humorous introduction based on a frog blowing bubbles into a drink and then moved on to a Scientific explanation where we applied the skills we have been learning throughout this unit. We had lots of great examples and everyone took a lot of care to build in conjunctions.
In Science, we have been learning about vertebrates and the differences between mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. We have started to look at classification keys and will continue to use these next week. In Music, we used a computer-based composition tool to create our own percussion compositions. We focused in particular on varying our dynamics and on creating repeating patterns.
In Maths this week, Year 3 finished their unit on shape by learning key vocabulary for discussing 3D shapes and also by making some 3D shapes using spaghetti and blu-tac. They did brilliantly with this and showed great resilience! Year 4 have been looking at symmetry and have created some excellent symmetrical patterns. They also recalled many 2d shapes, especially the names of quadrilaterals, using their knowledge to describe the key features.
Our Computing lesson this week was based on how a digital device works, focusing on the concept of inputs, processes and outputs. Once we identified which were the inputs and the outputs, we were able to have a go at designing our own devices which contained these components. We came up with really some inventive ideas! We will now go on to explore how computers are connected and how information can be passed between these different devices.
