Oak Week Beginning 12th June 2023
Our last 'quiet week' for a while, has been filled with lots of great learning opportunities.
We have continued to learn more about the plot and the characters in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and the children have summarised the stories key events and made a class story map for future reference. I have shared with them a graphic novel version of the story too to allow them to compare the different ways in which this story can be told. We thought about what was the same? What was different? What did they miss out? They then chose a section to write themselves, showing that they could write cohesively and add extra details about the characters into their sentences, in a certain way. They are really improving with these skills.
In Maths we continued to add and subtract decimals with the same and different numbers of decimals places. They completed lots of problem solving questions and spotted mistakes and misconceptions. They also looked at the most efficient strategies for adding and subtracting thinking about using a range of methods such a mental calculations, number lines and formal written methods, deciding which was the best for them.
In other lessons, the children have designed, planned and tested out the fun activities for Sports Day for all the children to compete in, in their House teams. They looked at the equipment available, thought about the skill levels and limitations the younger children may have and factored these in to their plans. In the PE lesson on Thursday they set them all up and tested them out - I can't wait to see what the rest of the school think about their ideas; they will have lots of fun, that is a certainty. In PSHE we have been studying the changes going on in our brains when hitting/approaching puberty and made a model of the brain, in the form of a hat they could wear, showing all the different sections of their brains and what each parts of the body or actions they controlled. Next we will consider how these brain changes affect our emotions. In Science we have started our new topic entitled "Animals" - Including Humans, and our first lesson was all about classifying different groups of animals by using a variety of different methods, for example a decision tree, Carroll diagram and Venn diagrams. They had to carefully think about the different characteristics that could be used to sort them into similar groups.
On Friday afternoon we had our last ever trip to Forest School, it was a very hot walk there and back but we sought out the shade under the trees and had our final playtime in a space that has been very special for many of the children. Lots of happy memories have been made since their days in Reception. It was quite a poignant moment for some of them as now they are starting to experience some of their 'lasts' whilst in our school!!
Next week is Bikeability and the week after is their transition day at BHA, the Bell Boating Regatta and the Year 5 party at Bredon Hancock's School - its all go on the Oak Class calendar!!
