Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 Hawthorn wb 4th September

What a wonderful start to the new school year we've had in Hawthorn Class. The children came back refreshed, full of enthusiasm and raring to go!
This week, we've spent a lot of time settling into our new routines and getting to know each other. We have two new Teaching Assistants joining Team Hawthorn this year - Mrs Poole and Mrs Harrigan. The children gave them a lovely, warm welcome and they've fitted in straight away. Please see our welcome back letter and website page for everything you need to know about Hawthorn class - and our 'Meet the Teacher' session will be held in the classroom next Wednesday at 2:30 pm.
On Wednesday, the children completed their first piece of writing and told us all about the super things they did on holiday and the places they visited. They got off to a cracking start! We've already started our first English topic, which is a poetry unit based on the book, 'I love bugs'. The children started to think about adjectives and then they learned the poem along with some actions to help them to remember it.
In maths, we've begun our work on place value. The Year 1s have been sorting objects and counting up to 10 - both inside and outside the classroom. Year 2s started with a quick recap of numbers to 20 then practised counting objects to 100 by making 10s.
We have an exciting new topic this term called 'Intrepid Explorers'. We'll be emailing details so that you know what the children will be learning about and can support them with this. We began by creating a super continents display so that we can track where some famous explorers journeyed to. The children really enjoyed making their collage continents, using different coloured tissue paper to represent each one. An awful lot of geographical learning was done in the process!
In Science we started out new topic on Animals including Humans.  The children shared their knowledge of parts of the body and the we went out into the playground, drew around out partners and then labelled as much as we could using the largest chalk crayons any of us had ever used!
