23 Hawthorn wb 18th September
It's been a very Harvest week in Hawthorn class! We began by visiting Ashton Free Church on Monday afternoon (aka the chapel) for a lovely 'Experience Harvest' session. The children visited five different stations, learning about the harvest of the garden, the ocean, the flock, the grain and the earth. So much work always goes into this and we're very grateful for the opportunity. The children were even given a hand-decorated goody-bag each containing the things they made. What an experience!
There have also been a lot of rehearsals for today's performance of the Vegetable Rap, along with our Key Stage 1 song, See the Farmer. For those of you who were able to attend, we hope you thoroughly enjoyed our Harvest Festival Service.
We've also been busy in many other curriculum areas. In English, we created a super class poem about games, using all the children's ideas. Next, they worked in small groups to write a poem on a subject of their own choice. They made very entertaining reading! We've now started on our final piece of work, which will be a poem written individually by each child, and by popular vote, the subject-matter chosen was - pets! We can't wait to see how they get on ...
Year 1s have practised counting on and back within 10, as well as finding one more and one less than a given number. Year 2s have learned the importance of being able to write numbers in both words and numerals. They've also partitioned numbers to 100 in different ways.
In our topic work, the children found out more about Christopher Columbus and had a go at sequencing a series of pictures depicting his life. In science, we continued with our work on senses and the children thought about the parts of the body associated with each sense. They remembered lots of information from the previous week, we were very proud of our budding Scientists!
