Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 Hawthorn wb 12th June

It's been a hot one this week, but there's still been lots of lovely learning in Hawthorn class. The children have tried their best and worked hard.
In English, we've been exploring grammatical aspects of our new text, How to Hide a Lion at School. The children have been using precise verbs such as sneaking, trooping and tiptoeing rather than walking.  They then moved on to using co-ordinating conjunctions to join two clauses in a sentence.
Both year groups have continued learning about money in maths. Year 1s have been focusing on identifying notes while Year 2s have been learning about giving change, which can be quite a tricky concept so any help you can give them at home will be extremely beneficial. They've also had a go at money-related calculations and problem-solving.
We started our new topic, Beside the Seaside, by finding the UK on globes, atlases and maps, then went on to identify the seas and oceans that surround it. We linked our music lesson to this too and you may hear the children singing, "Oh the big ship sailed on the ally ally oh...."
In Computing the children have been designing their own maps for the BeeBots so that they can write their own algorithms for the BeeBots to move from one place to another.
We were joined by the Holly class Year 1s for RE and the children were fascinated to find out about the 99 Names of Allah. They worked in small groups to match some of these names with pictures and demonstrated some super teamwork in the process.
Finally, in Science the children have continued with their work on plants and they have looked at the inside of a seed and discussed what each part was for.
