Willow wb 30/01/23
Today we held our whole school 'Numbers Day' where the children could dress up in support of the NSPCC. Willow class completed a series of number challenges. Mrs Peacey worked with the children on many different number problems to develop their problem solving skills. One example included using coins to reach target numbers and use their knowledge of doubling and some fun dice games. The children had a great time completing these activities whilst developing their Math's skills. Lots of the children dressed up and got involved in this fun day.
In Writing lessons we have continued with our work on 'Firebird'. This week the children have been writing dialogue between the main characters to explore how each of the Princes felt when their youngest brother made the decision to go in search of the Firebird. They began by writing this as a short playscript to focus on sentence structure and then adapted this into dialogue and making sure they used the correct punctuation.
This week in science, we looked at how water changes state. We talked about melting, freezing, condensation and evaporation. We then carried out two experiments. We put cling film over a jug of boiling water and observed how the water vapour condensed to a liquid. We also investigated the effect salt has on ice melting. In Music, we listened to The Firebird by Stravinsky, which links with the book we are reading in English. You can listen to it here if you want to listen at home.
We have also continued with our Computing work which is linked closely to our theme in Art of Ancient Islamic patterns. The children used the tools in Inkskape to create a simple shape which could then be tesselated. This was a challenging skill as they had to ensure they had programmed the correct instructions in order for the shape to tesselate but everyone made a great start.
It has been another busy week in Willow class, ending with lots of fun for Numbers Day.
