Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Week Beginning 30th January 2022

Our quest stories are well and truly under way this week! Oak Class have been very busy in their Writing lessons, using all the skills they have recently been taught, to create an engaging, exciting and gripping story of discovery. We have really enjoyed hearing snippets of the stories in class and can't wait to read the final versions.

We have been practicing our tag rugby skills in preparation for the cluster schools tournament next week. Nine year 5's and nine year 4's will make up the teams and head off to Bredon Middle School next Wednesday. Mrs Thornton is also organising an inter-house tag rugby tournament for all children to be a part of and show off the improvement in their skills.

One of the highlights of this week was our forest school session, where we did some work in our community, litter picking. We worked really hard to remove as much litter as we could from Elmley and Beckford Road, the edge of the meadow, Back Lane and the cut through by the orchard leading to the park. We ended up collecting 1 huge heavy bin bag full! The children were very precise and dedicated to clean up their local environment and were saddened to see the types of materials being dumped. We even found a couple of old glass bottles, one of which had the message 'deposit charged 6p on this bottle', bringing back childhood memories for Mrs Shiels and myself!! It has really raised their awareness of taking home their rubbish and looking after our environment. We even had a bit of time to play in the park!

Number Day today, has given us plenty of opportunities to talk about maths and complete lots of puzzle style activities in lessons. The children had the choice of lots of different number challenges to complete which made them think in lots of different ways than in usual lessons - it was great to see their resilience in action when faced with a mathematical dilemma. Have a look in the gallery for some of the challenges they had to solve. They also made a great effort with their dressing up as numbers - they looked fabulous. See the gallery for pictures of how inventive our outfits were!

Next week is Children's Mental Health Week and we have lots of exciting activities to complete including yoga, a whole school walk, baking and lots more. If you want to join us in class next Friday afternoon, let us know via the Google form we sent you last week.
