Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 14th November

This week in English, we've turned our attention to grammatical skills as the Year 1s have practised writing accurate sentences with a capital letter and full stop, then joined two clauses with the word 'and'. Year 2s have written sentences in which they mixed up parts of different fairy tales and then went on to create some compound sentences.

In maths, Year 1s have developed their understanding of subtraction and studied fact families involving subtraction sentences. Year 2s continue to work on their addition skills using different strategies to help with their calculations.

Our topic lesson was one of many comparisons. We looked at the lives and achievements of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, found out what some people said about them at the time, and enjoyed a healthy debate about who was most deserving of a statue outside St Thomas's Hospital in London. Some children thought Florence, others chose Mary, while many felt that both of our real-life superheroes should be recognised. Next week we're moving on to the second part of our learning: How have nursing and hospitals developed over time? and When and why was the NHS created?   To help us understand a bit more about this, we had a visit from an ambulance!  The children were able to go inside and see the equipment and ask lots of questions of the two visiting paramedics.  One of the questions was, "How do you help people get up when they fall down?" and as you can see from the pictures, they showed us a very special cushion that they use!  We were very thankful to Joey's Mum and her paramedic partner for sparing the time to come and visit us.
On Friday we went to Forest School where we toasted marshmallows and had lots of fun. Thank you to Mrs Shiels and Mrs Peacey who joined us today.
And finally, Christmas is fast approaching so we have made a start on our songs for the Nativity. Scripts have been sent home with the older children and we can't wait to put it all together. Watch this space for further updates over the next couple of weeks.
