Diary of a Wombat
The funny story of 'Diary of a Wombat' has introduced us to the wonderfully varied world of Australian native animals. We have been particularly interested in hammerhead sharks and kangaroos. We have made some lovely coral reef shakers (like a snow globe without the snow) and pretended to be kangaroos, jumping around, taking it in turn to have a joey in a pouch.
We have experimented with clapping sticks and some of us made our own didgeridoos. We thought about how vast Australia is and talked about Flying Doctors. We then made and tested paper airplanes. We have also made a bus in our role play area, and the children have had great fun using it on imaginary journeys and taking their 'passports' with them.
We have been listening to and comparing different sound cubes and using our knowledge of maths language to describe where an Australian toy has been put. On Friday, it was Number Day, and the children immersed themselves in all things mathematical i.e how many jumps can you do in 10 seconds, how many socks can you hang up in a minute? Can you measure something with your feet or hands?
