Shaping Bright Futures Together

2324 Holly Class week beginning 24th June

The story to lead our learning this week has been Martha Map it Out, it is all about a little girl called Martha who loves all sorts of different types of maps. She lives in a city which is very different to our village and it has inspired the children to have their own go at map making. They have worked together to create large scale maps of the village using pictures and lego to create some of the buildings, as well as creating maps of the meadow on Tuesday at Forest school. They have been working hard to use the correct geographical terminology to describe what they have drawn and the Year 1 children in particular were challenged to describe different parts of the village. All of the children created and wrote a postcard, which included their map work, to tell Martha all about our village. The Year 1 children have taken their geography learning another step further and created a lift the flap book that explains where in the world we live. They first labelled the four countries of the UK and correctly identified England, they they found a picture of our county, the nearest town (Evesham) and then finally a map of the village.

To follow on from this geography work, as part of our literacy work, the children used what they have been working on over the past couple of weeks linked to instruction writing to write some instructions to go with their maps, explaining to the reader how to get from school up to the meadow. The children have also all been working really hard on their handwriting over the last few weeks. All of the children are learning how to form cursive letters and are giving this tricky skill a really good go.

We were lucky enough this week to have Tristan's mum come in with her accordian. The children were fascinated and thrilled as she played for us and we even enjoyed a little sing song as she played us some familiar tunes! We were then lucky enough to have a go at playing 2 smaller versions that she had brought for us to have a go on, it was such a treat and really inspiring for the children to see. The Year 1 children later reflected on what they had heard and talked about how it had made them feel as part of the music work we are doing this half term.

Wednesday was a big and exciting day for all of the children as it was transition morning in school. All of the Year 1 children spent the morning practising for being in Year 2 and all of the Reception children practised being in Year 1. Everyone did brilliantly and, whilst we were happy to be back together as Holly class in the afternoon, they left school feeling happy and excited about next year.
