Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 1st July

Only two more weeks to go - the time is really marching on now!
This week, the children have had a go at lots of different quizzes and shown just how much they've learnt this year. Very well done to all of them.
In maths, the Year 1s have found out more about money and counted coins to make different amounts. The Year 2s have been calculating with money and solving 2-step problems.
On Monday we had a great music lesson where the children practised keeping a beat and using their bodies as percussion instruments.  Different children led our "orchestra" and decided on the sound to use and the beat to make.
It was Sports Day on Tuesday, which we hope you enjoyed if you were able to attend. The children really showed off their skills and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities they participated in. They also demonstrated a great sporting attitude, so well done to all Team Hawthorn children. Please see Mrs Thornton's blog for more information and photographs.
It was also our last swimming session this week and the children enjoyed a super play session after all their hard work.  Many of them have made good progress and swam a new personal best for them.  Well done!
In Science, we continued with our work on plants and the children firstly looked at our investigation on growing cress seed.  Some unusual results were seen, so we're going to try again!  After that we investigated what was inside a seed.  The children used magnifying glasses to look closely at a range of seeds and then we dissected a kidney bean.  It was really exciting to see the baby plant inside the bean!

We finished off the week with some art, based on Van Gogh's famous sunflowers painting, and using a range of materials to print our designs. Some of the Year 4s came to join us and were excellent young leaders, helping and encouraging our children in their artistic endeavours. We'll post a selection of the pictures in next week's blog.
Until then, have a lovely weekend and we'll look forward to our penultimate week together.
